When Perseverance Means Honouring the Limits I Didn’t Choose
Sometimes perseverance means taking another step. Sometimes it means resting long enough to take the next one. Hebrews 12 helps us rethink endurance, limits and following Jesus.
Chronic pain has changed my pace, but it has not ended my journey with Christ.

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
Hebrews 12:1–2
Some days, my mind has plans that my body simply cannot keep up with.
I can wake up knowing exactly what I want to accomplish. I see the unfinished things around me. I think about the people who need me, the responsibilities waiting for me, and everything I hoped to get done.
Then pain enters the conversation.
It does not ask whether today is convenient. It does not care what is written on my list.
That is when the struggle inside me begins.
Do I push through?
Do I rest?
Am I listening to my body, or am I giving up too easily?
Living with chronic pain has made those questions much more complicated than they once were.
I do not want pain to decide everything about my life. But I am learning that constantly fighting against my physical limits is not the same thing as perseverance.
Perseverance is not refusing to stop. Perseverance is refusing to abandon the journey.
Some days continuing the journey requires another step.
And some days it requires me to stop for a while.
What Does Hebrews 12:1–2 Mean?
Hebrews 12 follows a chapter filled with accounts of people who continued trusting God through uncertainty, suffering, waiting, and circumstances they could not control.
Then the writer gives us the image of a race.
We are told to lay aside what weighs us down and run with perseverance “the race marked out for us,” keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.
It is important not to make this passage say something it does not.
Hebrews 12 is not specifically teaching about chronic pain or telling us when we should physically rest. The writer is encouraging believers to endure faithfully as they follow Christ.
But that truth speaks directly into how I understand perseverance within my own circumstances.
The focus is not on proving how strong we are.
It is on continuing faithfully.
And we do that by looking to Jesus.
Chronic pain can make me measure perseverance by what I accomplish.
Hebrews gives me a different question:
Am I still following Christ?
Chronic Pain Has Changed What Perseverance Looks Like
There was a time when pushing through seemed like strength.
If something needed doing, I did it.
If I was tired, I kept going.
If another responsibility was waiting, I found a way to fit it in.
Chronic pain has complicated that way of living.
There are days when determination carries me further than I expected. There are other days when determination cannot change what my body is telling me.
That can be incredibly frustrating.
Sometimes I am not resting because I want a quiet afternoon.
I am resting because my body has reached a limit that determination cannot erase.
That is when guilt can creep in.
I look at what I have not finished.
I think about what I had planned.
I notice what other people seem able to do without thinking twice about it.
Suddenly rest does not feel like something my body needs.
It feels like failure.
But I am learning to separate those two things.
My body having limits does not mean my faith has limits.
I can still follow Jesus on a day when following Him looks quieter than I wanted it to.
I Am Still in the Race Even When My Pace Changes
The words in Hebrews have taken on a different meaning for me:
“The race marked out for us.”
My race does not look exactly like someone else’s.
Even my own race does not look the way it did in another season of my life.
That has been difficult to accept.
There are things I would like to do more easily. There are times when I would like to make plans without wondering how much pain I will be in when the day arrives.
There are days when I miss being able to simply do without calculating what it might cost me afterward.
Chronic pain changes that.
But it does not remove me from the journey.
I am still in the race, even when I cannot move through it the way I once did.
I need to remember that when I start measuring today’s life against yesterday’s abilities.
God is not asking me to compete with a previous version of myself.
He is asking me to follow Jesus today.
Resting Is Not Always Giving Up
This is where perseverance and rest can seem to contradict each other.
We hear:
Keep going.
Don’t give up.
Push through.
Be strong.
Sometimes those are exactly the words we need.
There are difficult things I cannot avoid simply because they hurt. Living with chronic pain means I cannot always wait until I feel completely well before participating in life.
If I waited for a completely pain-free day before doing anything meaningful, I could spend far too much of my life waiting.
So I do persevere.
I show up.
I do things even when they are harder than they once were.
But perseverance does not require me to ignore every warning my body gives me.
Sometimes faithfulness means continuing despite discomfort.
Sometimes wisdom says, Enough for today.
The difficult part is learning which one I am facing.
How Do I Know Whether to Push or Pause?
There is no simple answer.
That may be one of the hardest things about living with ongoing pain.
I cannot divide every decision neatly into perseverance or giving up.
Instead of asking only:
Can I make myself do this?
I am learning to ask:
What does faithfulness look like with the strength I actually have today?
Am I avoiding something because it is difficult?
Am I pushing myself because I am afraid of disappointing someone?
Does this genuinely need to happen today?
Can I ask someone for help?
Can something wait?
Am I trying to prove something God never asked me to prove?
Hebrews points me back to where those questions need to begin:
“fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
Not on someone else’s expectations.
Not on my unfinished list.
Not on what I used to be able to do.
Strength Looks Different Than I Thought
“Strength” used to sound like:
Keep going.
Don’t let this stop you.
You can handle it.
Now I am discovering that strength can sound very different.
I need help.
I can’t do that today.
That will have to wait.
I need to rest.
No.
Those words do not always come easily.
But neither does pretending I am fine when I am not.
I do not have to prove my perseverance by running myself into the ground.
I can respect the reality of the body I am living in today and still live faithfully within it.
Some days perseverance is getting up and doing what I can.
Some days it is changing my plans.
Some days it is accepting help.
Some days it is resting without spending the entire time criticizing myself for resting.
Tomorrow may look completely different.
And that is okay.
My Worth Has Not Changed Because My Body Has
On the days when pain interferes with everything I planned, I need to remember that my worth to God has not changed.
My value does not rise on productive days and fall on painful ones.
Jesus did not give His life for the most efficient version of me.
He loves me when I accomplish something meaningful.
He loves me when the list remains unfinished.
He loves me when I am able to serve someone else.
He loves me when I am the one who needs help.
Pain can change what I accomplish in a day.
It cannot change whose I am.
That is where I want my attention to return when frustration starts becoming self-criticism.
I belong to Christ on the days when I accomplish everything I hoped to do.
And I belong to Christ on the days when simply getting through the day takes everything I have.
What Faithfulness Looks Like Today
Maybe today is a day to keep going.
Maybe today is a day to change the plan.
Maybe something needs to wait.
Instead of beginning with everything you think you should accomplish, ask:
What does faithfulness look like with the strength I actually have today?
Then begin there.
Do what genuinely matters.
Ask for help where you need it.
Let something wait if it can wait.
Rest if you need rest.
And if today allows only a small step, let it be a small step.
You do not have to finish the whole race today.
You only have to keep turning toward Christ.
Your pace can change without your faithfulness disappearing.
Questions for Journaling & Reflection
- Where am I measuring myself against what I used to be able to do?
- When I rest, what thoughts make me feel guilty or unproductive?
- Am I pushing myself in an area because I am afraid of disappointing someone?
- How do I recognize the difference between avoiding something difficult and respecting a genuine limit?
- What would faithfulness look like today if I worked with the strength I actually have instead of the strength I wish I had?
A Prayer for the Days My Body Changes My Plans
Jesus,
You know what I hoped to do today.
You know what hurts. You know what I am tired of carrying. You know how frustrating it can be when my body changes plans I wanted to keep.
Help me not to measure my faithfulness by how much I accomplish.
Give me wisdom when I do not know whether to keep going or stop.
When I need courage, help me take the next step.
When I need rest, help me receive it without turning rest into another reason to criticize myself.
When I need help, give me the humility to ask.
When something can wait, help me let it wait.
And when I begin comparing who I am today with who I used to be, remind me that You are with me here too.
Keep my eyes on You.
My pace may change.
My plans may change.
What I can carry may change.
But I am still Yours.
And I am still following You.
