Not Every Idea Is an Assignment

Learning to discern God’s direction when desire and uncertainty pull me in different directions

Scripture Focus: Proverbs 3:5–6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart … and he will make your paths straight.”

Not every idea is an assignment. I have to remind myself of that when a possibility excites me and I immediately want to know whether God is telling me to pursue it.

I sometimes pray for guidance while quietly hoping God will confirm the answer I already want. I tell Him I am willing to follow, but part of me has already chosen the destination.

That does not mean the desire is wrong. It means desire alone cannot tell me whether a path is right.

I need more than passion. I need discernment.

What Does Proverbs 3:5–6 Mean?

Proverbs 3 records a father’s instruction to his son about living wisely and faithfully. He tells his son to trust God rather than depending entirely upon his own understanding.

This does not mean God wants us to stop thinking, ignore our feelings, or reject practical wisdom. It means our perspective is limited. We cannot see every consequence, recognize every motive, or know what lies beyond the decision in front of us.

Trusting God with all my heart means letting Him challenge the answer I prefer.

Acknowledging Him in all my ways means including Him in the decision before I act, not asking Him to approve it afterward.

The promise that God will make our paths straight does not guarantee that every choice will become obvious. It does not mean obedience will always produce an easy life. It means I can trust God to direct a life that is honestly surrendered to Him.

Why Following My Heart Is Not Enough

My feelings are not the enemy. They tell me when something matters to me.

A strong desire may reveal what brings me joy. Fear may expose what I am afraid to lose. Excitement may draw my attention toward an opportunity I should explore.

But those feelings are not final instructions.

Fear can sound like a warning from God when it is really anxiety. Impatience can sound like urgency. Relief can feel like peace simply because I want the uncertainty to end.

God works through our desires, but our desires still need to be tested.

Jesus said:

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
John 10:27

Learning to recognize Jesus’ voice begins with knowing what He has already revealed about Himself. His leading will agree with His character. It will not require me to become dishonest, unkind, manipulative, or careless with other people.

The closer I remain to Christ, the easier it becomes to recognize what sounds like Him and what sounds like my fear, pride, or impatience.

When My Life Changed Direction

Leaving work because of my health forced me to reconsider what purpose would look like in this part of my life. I could no longer measure a meaningful day by how much I accomplished or whether I could maintain the pace I once kept.

Writing devotionals, creating ministry resources, and working on The Misadventures of Raven have given me meaningful ways to use my voice. They were not part of the future I once imagined, but they have become an important part of the life I am living now.

At the same time, I have many ideas. Some stay with me and continue to grow. Others feel urgent for a day and disappear by the following week.

I am learning to appreciate an idea without immediately turning it into an obligation. Excitement may invite me to explore something, but it does not automatically mean God has asked me to build my future around it.

How Do I Know If God Is Leading Me?

I would love to have a spiritual test that produces an immediate yes or no. God has not promised me that kind of certainty, but He has given me reliable ways to examine a decision.

Does It Agree With Scripture?

God will not direct me to do something that contradicts His Word or the character of Christ.

If a path depends upon dishonesty, manipulation, cruelty, or disregard for another person, I do not need another sign. Passion does not turn disobedience into God’s will.

Am I Asking for Guidance or Confirmation?

This is the question that searches me most deeply.

Am I genuinely willing to hear no? Have I left room for God to redirect me? Or am I collecting reasons to defend the choice I have already made?

Surrender does not mean pretending I no longer care. It means telling God what I want while allowing Him to say something different.

What Is Creating the Urgency?

Some decisions have real deadlines. Others feel urgent because I am uncomfortable without an answer.

Waiting gives me time to notice what urgency was hiding. An idea that comes from a moment of frustration may lose its power once the emotion settles. A direction worth pursuing often remains worthy after the first excitement has passed.

Have I Asked Someone Wise and Trustworthy?

Trusted Christian counsel does not replace Scripture or prayer. It can, however, reveal something I have missed.

I need people who care enough to be honest with me. Agreement may feel supportive, but wise counsel sometimes sounds like a question I would rather not answer.

Discernment Is Not Endless Second-Guessing

There is another danger I need to recognize. I can become so afraid of making the wrong decision that I refuse to make any decision.

That is not trust either.

God’s guidance is not a hidden puzzle designed for me to fail. He does not abandon me because I make an imperfect choice while sincerely seeking to honour Him.

When a decision agrees with Scripture, survives honest examination, and is supported by wisdom, I can choose without demanding absolute certainty. I can trust God to correct me if correction is needed.

Faith does not always look like receiving a sign. Sometimes it looks like making the wisest decision I can and taking the next step with humility.

When God Does Not Answer Quickly

I worry that I will miss God’s will or make a choice that cannot be repaired. That fear makes every decision feel heavier than it is.

God does not ask me to predict my entire future. He asks me to be faithful with what I know today.

James tells believers to ask God for wisdom because He gives generously. This does not promise an immediate answer, but it tells me something important about the One I am asking. God is not reluctant to guide His children.

I do not always receive a dramatic answer. God often guides me through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, time, and circumstances. Sometimes the answer becomes clear. Sometimes I receive enough clarity for only one small step.

My responsibility is not to manufacture certainty. It is to remain close to Christ and respond faithfully to the light He gives me.

One Faithful Step

If you are facing a decision today, begin by telling God the truth.

Tell Him what you want. Tell Him what you fear. Tell Him which answer you hope He will give you.

Then ask:

• Does this direction agree with Scripture?
• Am I willing to let God redirect me?
• Is fear or impatience creating false urgency?
• What have wise and trustworthy people noticed?
• What is the next faithful step, even if I cannot see the whole path?

You do not need to solve your entire future today. Take the step you can take faithfully, and leave room for God to continue directing you.

1. What decision or possibility has been occupying my thoughts?
2. What answer do I honestly hope God will give me?
3. Which emotion is influencing me most strongly right now?
4. What would I be afraid to hear God say about this decision?
5. What is one faithful step I can take without forcing an answer?

A Prayer for Discerning God’s Direction

Jesus, I want to recognize Your voice, but my desires, fears, and expectations can become very loud.

Help me tell You the truth about what I want. Show me when I am asking for guidance and when I am only looking for confirmation.

Teach me to recognize the difference between urgency and obedience. Give me patience when I need to wait and courage when it is time to move.

Guard me from endless second-guessing. Remind me that Your guidance is not a test designed for me to fail.

If this path is right, help me walk it faithfully. If You are redirecting me, help me release my plans without believing I have lost my purpose.

Keep me close to You, even when I cannot see very far ahead.
