When Chronic Pain Changes What Faithfulness Looks Like
Chronic pain has changed what I can do, but it has not erased my worth or purpose. I am learning that faithfulness does not have to look the way it did before my health changed.
Learning that doing things differently does not mean my purpose is over

I still make plans as if pain has not changed my life. Then my body reminds me that it has.
My mind can create an entire day before my feet touch the floor. There are things I want to write, people I want to help, family responsibilities requiring attention, and projects I genuinely care about. My willingness is still there.
But willingness and physical ability are not always the same.
Chronic pain has changed how long I can stand, how far I can drive, how well I sleep, and how much energy I have available. The hardest part is not always the pain itself. Sometimes it is grieving the person I still expect myself to be.
When My Body Changed Before My Heart Was Ready
Receiving names for what was happening in my spine gave me answers, but answers did not make acceptance immediate.
Foraminal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and disc problems explained the pain, numbness, interrupted sleep, and limitations. They did not tell me how to adjust emotionally to a body that could no longer keep pace with my intentions.
I have gone to appointments and tried different approaches, hoping something would restore the capacity I remembered. When the pain remained, I often responded by questioning myself.
Maybe I had not tried hard enough.
Maybe I should be stronger.
Maybe I could still do everything if I organized myself better.
But no amount of determination can make a physical limitation disappear on command. I am learning to stop turning my body’s struggle into an accusation against my character.

What Does Psalm 73:26 Mean?
Psalm 73 was written from a place of deep spiritual struggle. The psalmist, Asaph, looked at the apparent success of people who ignored God and wondered whether his own faithfulness had been worthwhile.
His perspective changed when he entered God’s presence. He recognized that earthly strength, security, and circumstances are temporary, but God remains his lasting portion.
When Asaph says, “My flesh and my heart may fail,” he acknowledges human frailty. He is not specifically writing a promise about chronic pain, nor is he saying that physical suffering does not matter.
He is declaring that human weakness does not remove God’s presence or faithfulness.
Applied carefully to my own life, this verse does not promise that my spine will heal or that my former strength will return. It reminds me that when my physical strength is unreliable, God has not become unreliable.
My body may limit what I can accomplish. It cannot separate me from Christ or reduce my value in His eyes.
Grieving What I Can No Longer Do
There is grief in realizing that something once ordinary now requires planning, help, or recovery.
A drive may take more from me than it used to. Standing for too long may affect the rest of my day. Poor sleep can leave me beginning the morning with almost no energy. Even enjoyable activities may carry a physical cost that other people cannot see.
I can be grateful for my life and still grieve what has changed.
Grief does not mean I have rejected God’s goodness. It means I am being honest about loss.
I may miss the freedom of making plans without first calculating pain. I may miss trusting that my body will cooperate. I may miss the version of myself who could say yes without wondering what that yes would cost tomorrow.
Those feelings need somewhere to go.
When I refuse to acknowledge them, grief often returns as frustration, guilt, or anger toward myself. When I bring them to Christ, I do not have to make them sound faithful or hopeful. I can simply tell Him the truth.
Willingness Is Not the Same as Ability
I have sometimes judged my faithfulness by whether I completed everything I intended to do.
That measurement no longer works.
There are days when my heart is willing and my body cannot follow. That does not make my willingness false. It means I am human and physically limited.
Jesus knows the difference between refusing to act and being unable to act in the way I once could.
He knows when I would gladly help if I had the strength. He sees the care behind the message I send when I cannot be there in person. He sees the love in the smaller contribution that replaces the larger one I originally planned.
Faithfulness cannot be measured only by visible output. It also appears in honesty, wisdom, patience, and the humility to admit when something exceeds my present capacity.
When Other People Cannot See the Cost
Chronic pain is often invisible.
Someone may see me complete one activity and assume I can manage several more. They may not see the preparation, medication, interrupted sleep, discomfort, or recovery surrounding that one activity.
Even people who love me may not fully understand. I may not always understand it myself. My capacity can change from one day to another, making it difficult to plan or explain.
This uncertainty can make setting limits feel uncomfortable. I may fear being seen as unreliable or difficult. I may overexplain because I want someone else to confirm that my limit is legitimate.
But I do not need every person to fully understand before I respond honestly to my health.
I can communicate with kindness without defending every detail. I can care about another person’s disappointment without making my body pay the price for preventing it.
Has Chronic Pain Taken Away My Purpose?
Pain has changed what I can do, but it has not removed my ability to love, encourage, pray, create, listen, or share what God is teaching me.
My purpose was never dependent on having an unrestricted body.
That does not mean every former role or activity must continue. Some things may need to change. Some may need to be shared. Others may need to be released.
The form of my service can change without its meaning disappearing.
A devotional written slowly can still reach someone.
A prayer offered from a chair can still be sincere.
A quiet conversation can still carry compassion.
Asking for help can create an opportunity for another person to serve.
A smaller offering is not automatically a lesser one.
God is not asking me to imitate the capacity I had in another season. He is asking me to be faithful with the life and strength available to me now.
Learning a New Shape of Faithfulness
I am learning that faithfulness may look different from one day to the next.
On a stronger day, it may mean completing something meaningful.
On a difficult day, it may mean choosing the one responsibility that matters most and allowing everything else to wait.
It may mean changing how I participate rather than withdrawing completely.
It may mean preparing ahead, leaving early, sitting instead of standing, asking someone to drive, accepting help, or admitting that I cannot commit.
These adjustments do not prove that pain has won. They allow me to remain present without pretending my body has no limits.
Faithfulness is not repeating yesterday’s pace at any cost. It is listening for how Christ is asking me to live today.
Accepting Help Without Feeling Like a Burden
Needing help touches something vulnerable in me.
Independence feels safer. When I handle everything myself, I do not have to worry about inconveniencing anyone, owing anyone, or hearing no.
Chronic pain challenges that independence.
There are things I may be technically capable of doing that would leave me depleted afterward. Accepting help before I reach complete exhaustion can feel unnecessary or indulgent, even when it is wise.
But receiving care does not make me a burden.
The Christian life was never designed as complete self-sufficiency. We are called to carry one another’s burdens, which means there will be seasons when I help carry someone else and seasons when I allow someone to help carry me.
Receiving with grace can require as much humility as giving.
What Faithfulness Looks Like at My Current Capacity
Instead of beginning each day with the life I wish I could manage, I can begin with the life I actually have.
I can ask:
What is most important today?
Not everything that matters has to happen immediately.
What can my body realistically sustain?
A responsible plan includes the effect an activity may have afterward.
Can this be done differently?
Changing the method does not necessarily change the purpose.
What can be shared or postponed?
Help and flexibility are not admissions of failure.
Am I grieving a genuine loss or condemning myself for having one?
Grief needs compassion. Shame needs truth.
What would faithfulness look like if I stopped comparing myself with my former capacity?
God meets me in the life I am living now.
My Purpose Is Not Measured by My Pace
I do not know what my health will look like in the future. I can continue seeking appropriate care and hoping for improvement without making my peace dependent on a particular outcome.
Psalm 73 does not ask me to deny the weakness of my body. It gives me somewhere to stand when that weakness frightens or discourages me.
God remains the strength of my heart.
My pace may change.
My plans may require adjustment.
My body may prevent me from doing something in the way I once imagined.
None of those changes mean that Christ has stopped working through my life.
Perhaps this season is not asking me to prove how much pain I can overcome. Perhaps it is teaching me to recognize faithfulness in forms I once overlooked.
Faithfulness can be quiet.
It can be slow.
It can include grief.
It can receive help.
It can begin again with less strength than yesterday.
It still belongs to God.

- What do I believe other people might think when I cannot participate as expected?
- Is there a meaningful activity I could continue in a gentler or more sustainable way?
- What would faithfulness look like today if I stopped comparing myself with who I used to be?
A Prayer When Chronic Pain Changes My Life
Jesus,
You know the things I still want to do and the frustration I feel when my body cannot follow my plans.
You see the pain, exhaustion, interrupted sleep, and limitations that others may not notice. You also see the grief I struggle to name.
Help me stop treating physical weakness as a failure of character or faith.
Give me wisdom to recognize my present capacity and courage to communicate my limits honestly. Teach me to receive help without believing I have become a burden.
When I grieve the person I used to be, meet me with compassion. Show me how love, service, creativity, and purpose can continue in forms my body can sustain.
Remind me that my worth does not depend on my pace and my calling does not disappear when my circumstances change.
When my strength fails, be the strength of my heart.
Amen.
