Day 3 –Seeing Hearts, Not Just Behavior
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them…” – Matthew 9:36
Jesus didn’t just notice the crowds. He saw them. He looked beyond behavior and into hearts. Today’s devotional invites us to ask for that kind of vision: eyes that pause before judgment and choose empathy instead.
🌸 Gentle Questions to Begin
- Who am I struggling to see with compassion?
- What assumptions cloud my view of others?
- How might I respond differently if I saw their heartache
🔍 A Deeper Look at the Word
The word “compassion” in this verse comes from the Greek splagchnizomai, meaning to be moved from the deepest part of oneself. Jesus didn’t just feel sorry for people. He felt their pain. To see others as He did is to let love interrupt our assumptions.
🕊️ A Moment from My Journey
I once watched a woman at the pharmacy grow frustrated with the staff. My first instinct was judgment.
But then I noticed her trembling hands and weary eyes. Something shifted.
I felt a nudge: “See her.” So I did.
I offered a gentle smile, and she blinked, surprised, then she gave a gentle smile back.
That moment reminded me: compassion doesn’t excuse behavior, but it transforms how we respond.
💡 What Helped Me Heal
I began praying, “Show me the story behind the face,” and it softened me.
I started seeing people differently, not as interruptions, but as invitations.
Compassion became my lens, and healing followed.
🙏 A Prayer for Today
Jesus, help me see others the way You do, with love, grace, and empathy.
Interrupt my judgment. Move me with compassion.
Amen.
