Honoring Your Holy Desires and the Life God Is Growing Inside You

📖 SCRIPTURE (NRSV)

James 1:17
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

🌱 DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION

There is something beautiful about the way James describes God’s gifts. He doesn’t talk about them as random blessings or lucky moments. He calls them perfect. He calls them generous. He calls them steady, coming from a God who does not shift or change His mind about you.

And here is the part we often forget:
Some of God’s gifts show up inside us long before they show up around us.

A desire can be a gift.
A longing can be a gift.
A dream that keeps tugging at your heart can be a gift.

We sometimes treat desire like something suspicious, as if wanting more means we are ungrateful. But often, the desire is God’s way of nudging us toward the life He has been preparing for us. It is His way of saying, “There is more for you. Let Me show you.”

And sometimes, that desire becomes clearer when we see joy in someone else.
Not because we are jealous.
But because something inside us wakes up and whispers, “I want that too.”

That whisper is not wrong.
It is not selfish.
It is not a sign that you are lacking.

It is a sign that God planted something in you that is ready to grow.

The gift inside you is not meant to stay hidden.
It is meant to open.
It is meant to bless you.
It is meant to bless others.
It is meant to draw you closer to the One who placed it there.

You do not need to shrink to be holy.
You do not need to silence your desires to be grateful.
You do not need to hold yourself back to stay safe.

God is not intimidated by your longing.
He is the One who gave it to you.

💬 PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

I remember a time when I started noticing something new happening in me. It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t loud. It was more like a soft glow that kept showing up in the background of my days.

One afternoon, I was scrolling through photos of a friend who had stepped into something she had been dreaming about for a long time. Instead of feeling that familiar sting of comparison, I felt this warm spark inside my chest. It surprised me. It felt like joy. Real joy. And underneath it, something even more surprising: recognition.

It was as if her happiness woke up a part of me that had been quietly waiting for permission to breathe.

I set my phone down and said out loud, “God, I want that kind of joy too.”

And instead of guilt or shame, I felt this deep sense of peace. Almost like God was saying, “Good. I put that desire in you. Let’s grow it.”

That moment changed something in me.
I stopped treating my desires like problems.
I stopped apologizing for wanting more.
I stopped assuming that longing meant I was lacking.

I started seeing my desires as invitations.
I started trusting that the things I wanted were connected to the gift God placed inside me long before I knew how to name it.

And as I leaned into that truth, I felt lighter.
I felt hopeful.
I felt more like myself.

I realized that honoring my desires wasn’t selfish.
It was sacred.
It was a way of saying yes to the life God was already preparing for me.
