Unmasking the Inner Critic — A Journey Back to Your True Worth

Scripture Focus:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21
✨ Devotional Commentary
There’s a voice inside that doesn’t sound like God.
It’s sharp. It’s persistent. It’s cruel.
It tells you you’re too much, too sensitive, too scattered, too broken.
That voice isn’t holy—it’s inherited.
It’s the echo of every moment you were misunderstood, dismissed, or asked to shrink.
Proverbs reminds us that words carry power.
Even the ones we speak to ourselves.
Especially those.
God’s voice doesn’t shame.
It affirms.
It heals.
It calls us beloved.
💭 Personal Reflection
I’ve lived with an inner critic for years.
It sounds like me, but it’s not me.
It’s a mix of old teachers, childhood trauma, disappointed friends, and cultural expectations I never signed up for.
It shows up when I make a mistake.
When I forget something.
When I speak too boldly.
When I feel too deeply.
It says, “You’re exhausting.”
“You’re embarrassing.”
“You’re not enough.”
And for a long time, I believed it.
I thought that voice was truth.
So I masked.
I shrank.
I tried to become someone easier to love.
But masking didn’t make me feel safe.
It made me feel invisible.
Then I started listening for God’s voice.
Not the one that demanded perfection.
The one that whispered grace.
It said, “You’re mine.”
“You’re enough.”
“You’re allowed to be fully you.”
I started speaking back to the critic.
Not with anger.
With truth.
And slowly, the critic got quieter.
Not gone.
But less powerful.
Now, when it shows up, I pause.
I breathe.
I bless myself.
Because I know whose voice matters most.
And it’s not the one that shames.
It’s the one that stays.
